Graduate Residency | JANINE KELLY

GOMA’s Graduate Awardee 2024

Janine Kelly graduated from SETU with a BA (Hons) Degree in Visual Art in 2024. Her work is inspired by nature’s ability to change and adapt to humanity’s increasing desire for commodities. Drawing from her research into the world of fungi, she creates sculptural forms using detritus from both natural and manufactured sources. Like fashion trends, her sculptures are constantly evolving. Vibrant colors are juxtaposed with core elements to evoke a sense of wonder and breathe new life into discarded materials. Dedicated to sustainability, she incorporates recycled fibers into her work, employing techniques such as ripping, cutting, tearing, stitching, knitting, and crocheting—a meditative process that shapes each piece. Based in Dunmore East, County Waterford, she sources raw materials from the harbor, local beaches, and woodlands.

Janine was awarded an artist residency at GOMA Waterford as part of our annual graduate awards programme. Each year, GOMA provides selected recent graduates in Ireland with a range of resources, including exhibitions, residencies, bursaries, and training.
